This course elevates students' understanding of more complex Chinese syntax and grammatical concepts. Students will also explore the customs, history and art forms of Chinese people to deepen their understanding of the culture.Ĭhinese III course builds upon the skills developed in Chinese I and II, continuing to enrich students' learning of Chinese vocabulary and intermediate level of sentence structures. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to communicate effectively with native Mandarin Chinese speakers in meaningful conversations on the following topics: shopping, transportation, w eather, d ining, a sking directions, birthday party, s eeing a doctor and r enting an apartment, s ports and t ravel. They will acquire the ability to respond and interact appropriately in real life situations. Students' communicative competence will be further developed through a variety of interactive activities. Students will also learn Chinese typing, classroom survival expressions and fundamental knowledge on Chinese culture and customs.Ĭhinese II course builds upon the skills developed in Chinese I, extending students' ability to understand and express themselves in Chinese and increasing their vocabulary. At the end of this course, students will be able to communicate effectively with native Mandarin Chinese speakers in simple conversations on the following topics: introducing oneself/friends/family, talking about hobbies, school life and making appointments. Since this is an introductory Chinese course, the ultimate emphasis will be put on cultivating students’ interest in learning the language and on introducing them to the fun customs and the beauty of Chinese culture. The Chinese I course aims to help students to achieve the above 5 goals with a special emphasis on communicative competence and accuracy. Communities: Students will be able to use Chinese to participate in multilingual communities and for life-long learning.

Comparisons: Students will be able to use Chinese to make comparisons between the target language and culture with those of their native tongue.Connections: Student will be able to connect Chinese language with other disciplines such as Math, Social Study and Science so to use the language to function in academic and career-related situations.Cultures: Students will learn common knowledge on Chinese culture so to interact with cultural competence and understanding in the target language.Communication: Students will develop basic Chinese proficiency in all three modes of Communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentation.The curriculum of the Chinese courses are designed to align with the Washington/National standards for World Language Learning, which are categorized in five goal areas, also called 5Cs:
